Matteo Giordano
2010
film/video 1:14 min

Is this the future dream world that consumer electronics has in store for us 17998 years from now? If so, what exactly does this surreal vision imply? An unidentified screen-based gadget is spinning weightlessly in the air as if controlled by the mechanically moving hands of a pair of young girls dressed alike in light blue and white harlequin satin dresses. Does it point to the coming of new medieval times controlled by multinational corporations like Sanyo? For 20010 Matteo Giordano has appropriated, inverted and mirrored a commercial for a Sanyo product. What was most likely originally presented as the spectacular design of tomorrow here becomes a strange almost disturbing object. Rather than containing the solution to all our problems and needs is this perhaps a Pandora’s box in disguise? The sound track certainly does not match the brightness of the visual aesthetics of the commercial. We are left in wondering anticipation.

Jukebox  piloted  using  Twitter

TweetJukeBox is a jukebox piloted using Twitter. A traditional jukebox is a device of public installation that plays music in automatic after the introduction of a coin and the selection of a song to listen.
In the TweetJukebox you don’t have to insert a coin to listen the music, you need only to send a message (a tweet) with the name of song on Twitter, using a special hashtag (#): #lampojukebox
The song will be searched in the video database of Youtube and played from the jukebox.
Everyone can choose the song sending a tweet but only the people near the jukebox will listen the song.
That means the choose of the song is delocalized, in the cyberspace, instead the listen is located near the juxebox, in the real life.
Moreover, considering the dimension of the Youtube’s database, the TweetJukebox become a “celestial jukebox”, a jukebox that can play basically all the songs available on Internet.

“ExPorn” is a series of images that play with three concepts:
– Manipulating computer graphics
– Copyright (and materials fallen into the public domain for failure to comply with the formalities required by U.S. law)
– “Porn chic” wave of pornography or the “mass” appeared in the ’70s from “Deep Throat” and pornographic imagery in general until the first half of the ’80s
The images produced so far are derived from posters related to the film “Deep Throat” (with Linda Lovelace) and “Debbie Does Dallas” (with Bambi Woods) and the image of the cover of the videotape “The Wild Wild West” (with Hyapatia Lee).

I'M A NET ART WRITER...

For the “Lampo” exhibition i’ve proposed an intervention on the website www.lampo.info. A similar action can be counted in the Graffiti Net Art movement.
The Graffiti Net Art are a free collective reasoning. They are a choral reflection. They are an invitation to conceptual. They are free art in the Net. They are volatile. You can draw on a home as you would draw on a wall.
The Graffiti Net Art upsets the idea to have “your own untouchable website”: one day someone will get up and with amazement he will find his own index coloured, decorated, full of art. He will find its Index conceptualized. What was a grey website, fruit of a payment done to a graphic studio of serial projects, now is a unique creation. Everybody should pray every evening so that their website becomes object of a net art action.
Internet was born in the age of seriality. Serial goods is grey goods. The IT graffitismo intends to make unique (even only for short instants), thus make “coloured”, a serial instance.

generative art project based on the architecture of the Aurum building
Result: 3 prints on forex 70×100 cm

The work of Catodo is a generative art project based on the architecture of the Aurum building in Pescara, the structure that will accomodate the Lampo exhibition on new frontiers of digital art.
The architecture of Aurum in Pescara has almost a circular shape that remember the structure of an amphitheater (Figure 1).

Figure 1 – Planimetry of the Aurum

Inspired by this shape, i built a computer algorithm that:
1. generates a variable number of points on a circle;
2. moves these points by a random value along the x and y axes;
3. joins these points using a spline based on the algorithm of Catmull-Rom.
A schema of this algorithm is reported in figure 2.

Figure 2 – Random points joined by a spline

The result of this algorithm has been used as pattern for the generation of the images. I used a random approach in the choise of the position, of the dimension of the radius, of the size of the lines, and for the value of the alpha color that has determined the opacity of the images.
The management of the opacity has created an interesting effect of blurring that has produced a visual result similar to a complex system.
I experimented with three different predominant colors (green, red, and blue) and with a neutral color, white, generating three images in high resolution (100×70 cm) that represent the interconnection of two complex networks.
The generated images are represented by the Iteration #5132, #2149, #6534.

Technical Appendix
In this Appendix, I reported the source code of the algorithms that I used to generate the previous images.

Enrico “Catodo” Zimuel (Pescara, 1974) is a creative coder who started to program with a home computer Texas Instruments TI99/4A and never stopped. He released works on electronic and experimental music with the group Gli Elettrodi and with the Unit project, together with the artist Globster, at the end of ’90. He published these works with the Kutmusic label. He worked with fractal and generative art using different systems, like the home computer Commodore 128. He writes articles about eletronic art on the website aboutart.it. He is interested in net art and generative art using open source systems. He holds a B.Sc. (Hons) in Computer Science and
Economics from the University “G.D’Annunzio” of Pescara and he did computer science research at the Informatics Institute of the University of Amsterdam. He studied algorithms based on cellular automata with Stephen Wolfram at the Brown University (USA). He works and lives in Turin (Italy).

Jam sessions and experimental electronic music that will involve five performers:
Catodo: live coding with a Commodore 128
DJ Batman: vinyl and ethnic instruments, depending on the opportunity to see a turntable with flexi discs and dust off the famous two-handed technique of scratching, mixed with three non-electronic tools disturbance: rain stick, didgeridoo, Charonia Tritonis
The Dromer: drum machine, laptop and monome
Globster: sound sampler touch screen
Jaromil: intervene with some visuals with hasciicam whit Blended help.
Historic and unforgettable show!
